When Christopher Nolan put together his adaptation of The Odyssey, there were several changes to Homer's poem that he had to make for it to fit into a logical running time. At the same time, there were other changes that Nolan had to make because some of the things written in the over 2,500-year-old poem wouldn't work as well today, and some of the items took something away from Odysseus' story about his journey home.
